Name: Aiswariya Raja

College: Heinz

Major: Public Policy and Management

Class: 2018

Cities I've lived in: Muscat, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bangalore, Chennai

Prior development experience:

Prior to Heinz, I was a Teach for India Fellow during which I taught 80 children at a low-income public school through grades 2 and 3. I worked with these children to improve their literacy and math skills. I also worked with my students on several community engagement projects to give them more exposure to the problems around them. One such project was a community level initiative to facilitate the rehabilitation and de-addiction of alcoholics using technology.

Before my Fellowship, I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications Engineering from PES University in Bangalore, India. It was also during my undergraduate course that I cofounded a non-profit, India Watch that works towards the greater development of the educated youth, the urban and middle classes in the democratic process. It aims at addressing issues of a systemic nature by bringing in more efficient outreach towards war widows and seeking greater accountability in the disbursement of benefits; through involvement with various branches of the armed forces and central government.

My experiences thus far bring me to Heinz and this course!

Interests in development:
Through this course, I aim to develop a better technical know-how. So, I'm curious to learn more about the impact of technology, largely on education. I'm also interested in Social Innovation projects and want to learn more about how technology is a key aspect of innovation - to be able to think critically about what technology is best suited to solve a given problem.
